A brief history of picnicking
The origin of the picnic is surprisingly extravagant. When French nobles fled to England during the Revolution, they brought their lavish traditions with them. In 1801, a group of 200 young Francophiles founded the London Pic-Nic Society.
These early gatherings were anything but casual. Guests were required to bring a dish and six bottles of wine, and the events quickly became competitive spectacles, complete with amateur theatrics, singing, dancing, and even gambling.
